Suggestions to help make our individual homes and neighborhood safer:
1. Be “nosey” about your neighborhood. We need to work together as a community watching out for one another, to help keep each other safe.
2. Call 911, ANYTIME you see or suspect something suspicious occurring in the neighborhood.
3. Communicate with your immediate neighbors to watch for and be willing to call each other, if anything suspicious seems to be occurring with or on their property. (Exchange: Home, Work, and Cell phone numbers.)
4. Let a neighbor(s) know when you are going to be out of town, and how you can be reached in an emergency.
5. Have a Home Security system installed, and USE IT! It’s important to have a security system that has a loud external noise to make neighbors aware that it has been activated. Motion detectors in the house are also very useful.
6. Install motion-detector spot lights around the exterior of your house.
7. If you already have a Home security system have it updated to be
“wireless”, motion-sensitive, and high-frequency noise (breaking glass)sensitive. You must register your alarm system with the Atlanta Police Department. Residents can register their alarm system for free at www.crywolf.us/atlantaga/or by calling 1-855-725-7102
8. If your garage has windows, make sure that they are covered so that no
one can tell that the garage is empty, indicating “no one at home”.
9. If there is a door leading from the garage directly into the house, there are
a few potential deterrents that can be utilized. (Kick-bars, etc.)
10. Use lamp/light timers to give an appearance of someone being at home.
This is also useful with a IV/radio being turned on and off.
11. There are various devices that are sold which imitate a barking dog or some
other sound(s) coming from inside the house.
12. Make sure that your postal service is temporarily stopped when you are
out-of-town, or that a neighbor is daily removing your mail from the
mailbox.
13. Have the Atlanta Police come out and give you a free inspection and suggestions on how to further deter burglaries to your property. remember, the Atlanta Police department will come out and provide a personal home security inspection for you at no cost. Please call or e-mail Inspector Mayes (gmayes@atlantaga.gov – 678-887-4975).
14. Update your Home Owners Personal Property Insurance.
